It's a given that your prospectus, along with your website, constitute your shop window. Parents and students alike, use them to make their most important decisions about education. Decisions about changing school or taking the next step up the educational ladder. A good school prospectus is a highly potent tool for marketing and promotion. That's why it’s vital for you to have great school prospectus photography. Well crafted images can often communicate as much, and sometimes more than the text on a page.

Photography for all sectors of education

Whether it’s for nursery, secondary, further education, university or special needs, your prospectus photography needs to stand out. It should convey what’s unique, beneficial and special about your school or college and why parents and students should choose you. Images should convey positive messages. For example, these might be about your learning environments, the great teaching, support, friendships, learning being fun, working hard and playing hard etc.

You may excel in a particular area of the curriculum. You may have very new infrastructure or be proud to be able to teach in a set of historic buildings. Perhaps you have a great reputation for sports or music or have fantastic resources. There may be any number of things that we can identify as key features and benefits that enable you to stand out. Therefore, we should certainly include these in our wish list of where to focus the camera.

Planning

We usually agree a wish list of shots well in advance of the shoot and if possible, do this in conjunction with a meeting and a recce. This allows all involved to understand the process and what's entailed. Days run so much more smoothly when they're structured logically. For example, not moving far between each subject and scenario, and being realistic about how long to spend with each.

Students of all ages can be a joy to work with. By the same token some can occasionally be uncooperative or disruptive, so it's worth allowing time for settling down. Once students relax and become used to the presence of a camera (and the occasional flash), things become so much easier. I recommend allocating two days to shoot a new library of school prospectus photography.
