Industrial Photography for Create Flavours
Impressive facilities
A very recent commission was for me to produce a new library of fresh and engaging industrial photography for Create Flavours. Reassuringly, as their name suggests, they're in the business of creating and supplying flavourings to the food industry. Their impressive facilities are located in Clevedon, near Bristol. These include a laboratory, research and development (R&D) area, offices, a production unit plus warehousing and distribution.
In the laboratory
In the Create Flavours laboratory, there are literally thousands of individual bottles containing a different flavour. Almost everything here is white. The walls, the ceiling, the worktops, the shelves, the bottles and of course, the lab technicians' coats. Only the blue floor and yellow steps offer any real contrast. More difficult to describe, is the pungent but pleasant aroma that permanently resides here. I suppose you could say, it's the combination of everything sweet and savoury but with particular key notes. This is the environment in which the process of inventing a new flavour begins and is refined for very exacting and demanding clients. It's not simply about the taste...things have to smell yummy, too.
The science behind food flavouring
Perhaps surprisingly, the science is quite simple. From a base or starting point, the process of creating a new flavour recipe begins. Then follows the cycle of tasting, developing and refining. This is done by adding or subtracting ingredients and altering their quantities. This same approach applies to drinks as it does to biscuits, cereals, sauces, dried foods, tinned foods etc. Using these recipes, the research and development kitchen subsequently produces samples. The flavoured foods or drinks are then presented for client tasting sessions. According to the feedback further adjustments might be made. With agreement reached over the exact quantities of the ingredients and final approval given by the client, it's then over to the production department.
Results
As a result of two full days of photography on site, I was able to cover every aspect of Create Flavour's business activities. We even managed to take some engaging portraits of every team member of this inspiring company.
